Redovan – El Rut

This had been one of the major discoveries of our trip a couple of years ago, and we thought it was still pretty much ‘off the radar’ , so were surprised to find half a dozen cars in the cemetery car park  (it’s unusual, but handy!)

Even more surprised to find a sign with the topo just beneath the crag!

It turned out that most of the dozen or so climbers were part of the Calpe long-stay set, and happily any increase in traffic hasn’t as yet lead to any noticeable polishing of the routes. It remains an awesome place, with the cave area providing the centrepiece with a dozen or so testing  40m+ 7s flanked by loads of long, high-quality 6s on either side.

It also has a sheltered bowl-shape and south facing aspect that gets all the sun going, and there was a lot of it! Poor choice for such a fine day (forecast hadn’t been so good ) and we were melting for the first time in weeks! Despite the heat, I repeated a fairly amenable 7a, The Michigan 7, which I did last time, which Helen now has on her wish-list for a future lead; made a respectable but ultimately failed attempt at Eclipse (7b+ and perhaps the route of the crag); and managed ‘Pulper’ which I failed on last time. Good day at the office 🙂

Helen continued her 6a juggernaut with Toribio El autista
